Georgetown County Airport

Georgetown, South Carolina

Location

The Georgetown County Airport, a 680-acre facility in coastal South Carolina, is primed for substantial growth and development, making it a key player in the region’s economic and aviation future. Strategically located between Charleston, 60 miles to the south, and Myrtle Beach, 50 miles to the north, the airport boasts a 39.5-foot elevation and exceptional infrastructure to support a wide range of aviation needs.

It features a 6,005-foot primary runway and a 4,539-foot crosswind runway, both equipped with RNAV/GPS capabilities for runways 5/23, ensuring efficient and modern navigation. The centerpiece of the airport is its 8,500-square-foot terminal building, constructed in 2009 in the Lowcountry architectural style. This two-story facility includes a fully equipped FBO operations area, offices, and meeting rooms, offering a versatile space for business and operational needs.

Major Milestone

A major milestone in the airport’s growth is its new role as the headquarters of Sherpa 6, a disabled veteran-owned technology company specializing in electronic solutions for battlefield command and control at all levels. Sherpa 6 plans to invest $19 million over the next five years, underscoring the airport’s potential to attract high-tech, innovative enterprises. In addition to fostering economic development, the airport offers a range of incentives, including job training programs, investment incentives, and technology tax credits, to encourage further business growth.

It features access to a large apron, a staging area, and a service ramp connected to the taxiway. The front entry will include a 16-foot-high hangar door opening

Greenville Downtown Airport

Greenville, South Carolina

Location

The Greenville Downtown Airport (GMU), located in Greenville, South Carolina, is a general aviation airport serving the Upstate region. It is South Carolina’s busiest general aviation airport, accommodating private and corporate aircraft, flight schools, and recreational aviation activities. Established in 1928, GMU is situated close to downtown Greenville, making it a convenient hub for local and visiting pilots.

Features

The airport features two runways, with the longest being 5,393 feet, allowing it to handle a wide variety of small to medium-sized aircraft. Facilities at GMU include a fixed-base operator (FBO) offering refueling, maintenance, and pilot services, as well as hangars and tie-down areas for aircraft storage.

Attractions

In addition to aviation services, the airport has become a community attraction. The Runway Café, located on-site, offers dining with views of the runway, and the adjacent Runway Park is a family-friendly area with playgrounds, a walking track, and aviation-themed exhibits. Greenville Downtown Airport plays a vital role in the local economy, supporting tourism and business travel while providing amenities for recreational aviation enthusiasts. Its proximity to downtown and strong community focus make it a unique and valuable asset for the region.

Hangar Opportunities

There is a national shortage of general aviation hangar space and there has not been a general aviation hangar built at Greenville Downtown Airport (GMU) in the last twenty years. Synergy’s Byrdland Hangar Project is the first approved development to bring much needed hangar capacity to the busiest general aviation airport in the state of South Carolina. The unsatisfied demand will be met with a dynamic mix of large corporate hangers and smaller single tenant hangars for general private aviation use. The airport has limited capacity for new hangar sites and our process is to develop upscale hangars with premium amenities. Six Hangar buildings sites are approved by the City of Greenville, with 17 individual hangar units available in the Fall of 2025.
