Major Milestone
Greenville Downtown Airport
Greenville, South Carolina
Location
The Greenville Downtown Airport (GMU), located in Greenville, South Carolina, is a general aviation airport serving the Upstate region. It is South Carolina’s busiest general aviation airport, accommodating private and corporate aircraft, flight schools, and recreational aviation activities. Established in 1928, GMU is situated close to downtown Greenville, making it a convenient hub for local and visiting pilots.
Features
The airport features two runways, with the longest being 5,393 feet, allowing it to handle a wide variety of small to medium-sized aircraft. Facilities at GMU include a fixed-base operator (FBO) offering refueling, maintenance, and pilot services, as well as hangars and tie-down areas for aircraft storage.
Attractions
In addition to aviation services, the airport has become a community attraction. The Runway Café, located on-site, offers dining with views of the runway, and the adjacent Runway Park is a family-friendly area with playgrounds, a walking track, and aviation-themed exhibits. Greenville Downtown Airport plays a vital role in the local economy, supporting tourism and business travel while providing amenities for recreational aviation enthusiasts. Its proximity to downtown and strong community focus make it a unique and valuable asset for the region.
Hangar Opportunities
There is a national shortage of general aviation hangar space and there has not been a general aviation hangar built at Greenville Downtown Airport (GMU) in the last twenty years. Synergy’s Byrdland Hangar Project is the first approved development to bring much needed hangar capacity to the busiest general aviation airport in the state of South Carolina. The unsatisfied demand will be met with a dynamic mix of large corporate hangers and smaller single tenant hangars for general private aviation use. The airport has limited capacity for new hangar sites and our process is to develop upscale hangars with premium amenities. Six Hangar buildings sites are approved by the City of Greenville, with 17 individual hangar units available in the Fall of 2025.
